After the 1945 August Revolution, the Hồ Chí Minh Government launched a drive called "A New Way of Life' which affected many social practices,
including weddings. This movement led to simpler
and more economical nuptial rites especially in the
liberated areas during the Resistance War Against
France (1946-1954). A wedding became similar to
a meeting. The bride and bridegroom and their
relatives and friends enjoyed a small party with tea,
cigarettes, and sweets. The couple's employer made
a short speech wishing his staff happiness and
longevity in order to perform their duties as good
citizens.
During the American War, wedding rituals in the North remained simple yet continued to evolve. The war and U.S. bombings kept the society impoverished and constrained. Couples wore simple clothes. Brides in áo dais and bridegrooms in suits were rare. Hosts usually served only tea, biscuits, sweets, and cigarettes.
The situation in South Việt Nam under the Sài Gòn regime was quite different between 1954 and 1975. There, weddings remained sophisticated and luxurious. Following the liberation of the South and
reunification of the country, southern wedding practices gradually influenced those in the North. After thirty years of war (1945-1975), northerners wanted more luxurious weddings. This trend accelerated after Renewal began in late 1986. The country's open-door policy allowed Vietnamese to see, accept, and adapt other countries' customs.
